Michael John Smith 0 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 It is very fashionable these days to talk about being in the present, and that being in the now will solve everything. My master Sogyal Rinpoche used to instruct us to use the present to meditate or otherwise practice our religion but warned against the danger of becoming what he called “Monsieur Maintenant†- Mr. or Ms. Now. On meditating on this I have come to the conclusion that he meant that if we do not keep in our minds the goal of liberation or enlightenment and make the right effort towards that goal, our egos start grasping at things to satisfy our present desires. This is what we call attachment but another word is addiction. We become addicted to something to satisfy our selfish, egoistic desires, to in fact satisfy what we perceive as our immediate needs, without thinking about the future, the goal - we become Mr. or Ms. Now.
